BMW Motorrad GS Trophy 2024

The Ultimate Safari on Two Wheels

Namibia, a place where the landscape looks like it was curated by Mother Nature on her day off—rugged, vast, and filled with enough dunes to make a camel homesick. Now, throw in a pack of motorcyclists on souped-up BMW GS bikes, looking like they’ve just been spit out of an action movie. Welcome to the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2024, where teams from around the globe come together for six days of sand, sweat, and probably a lot of swearing in multiple languages.

Namibia: The Playground for Grown-Up Kids

Namibia, folks. Home to those postcard-perfect landscapes that trick you into thinking, "This can’t be real!" But it is. And it’s about to become the backdrop for 22 teams—16 men’s and 6 women’s—from all over the world who’ll brave 1,350 kilometers of unforgiving terrain. The kind of terrain where you’re not sure if you’re on a road or just wishfully thinking there’s one under the dunes somewhere. It’s not a race, mind you. It’s a test of skill, endurance, and whether you can still remember how to set up a tent after hours of riding through the desert heat.

The South African Contenders: Local Legends in the Making

Naturally, we have to talk about Team South Africa because, well, homegrown heroes! Marthinus van Rooyen, JP Boer, and Ruhan de Villiers will be repping SA, making us all proud and slightly jealous as they rev their engines across Namibia. These guys didn’t just stroll onto the team. They earned their spots by besting a crowd of hopefuls in the national qualifiers, which I imagine involved more bruises and broken egos than any of them care to admit. But, hey, nothing says “I’m tough” like choosing to spend six days in Namibia on a motorbike.

The GS Trophy Bikes: Beefy Beasts with a Dash of Elegance

Now, let’s talk about the stars of the show—the bikes. The BMW R 1300 GS Trophy Competition Bike is making its grand debut, and oh boy, is it a beauty. We’re talking 143 horses under the seat and enough torque to make a dune quake in its sandy boots. It’s the bike you’d want with you if Mad Max called and said, “We’re going for a little off-road joyride.”

But that’s not all. The marshals will be cruising around on the BMW F 900 GS, making sure no one gets lost—or at least not too lost. Because let’s be real, part of the fun is getting a little off track and finding yourself halfway up a dune wondering how on earth you’re going to get back down.

Six Days of Pure Adventure... and Maybe a Little Crying

The route? Oh, just a casual blend of sand dunes, rocky mountain passes, dry riverbeds, and probably a few "oops, I didn’t see that coming" moments. There will be special stages designed to test not only the bikes but also the riders' resilience and patience. Think of it as Survivor: Motorbike Edition. There will be challenges where you need mechanical knowledge, navigation skills, and, let’s face it, a good sense of humor when things go sideways (which they inevitably will).

But that’s what makes the GS Trophy so special—it’s not just about the riding. It’s about teamwork, grit, and trying not to cry when you realize you’ve got to push your 250kg bike out of soft sand. You’ll see riders helping each other, not just within teams but across countries, which is probably the only time you’ll see strangers giving each other life-saving advice about tire pressure in five different languages.

Africa, We’re Back, Baby!

This year’s edition is extra special because it’s a homecoming of sorts. The GS Trophy first kicked off in Tunisia back in 2008, and now, 16 years later, it’s back in Africa. After detours through places like Patagonia, Mongolia, and Albania, BMW Motorrad decided it was time to bring it back to where it all began—the raw, unfiltered wilds of Africa. Namibia, get ready for the ultimate off-road spectacle!

So, grab your popcorn (or maybe just a map of Namibia) and follow the adventure. One thing’s for sure: by the end of it, these riders will have stories they’ll be telling for the rest of their lives—and they’ll probably be picking sand out of their boots for just as long!
