Get Ready to Rev Your Engines and Roll Your Eyes: Cars in the Park 2023!

On August 6, 2023, the roads around Pretoria will be clogged with classic cars heading to this automotive extravaganza. If you’re not a morning person, well, sorry, but classic car enthusiasts are up at the crack of dawn like eager puppies on Christmas morning, revving their engines in anticipation.

Frik Kraamwinkel, the chief organizer and the guardian of this petrol-fueled frenzy, can hardly contain his excitement. Every year, this event gains more momentum than a rocket-powered skateboard downhill. Picture this: 2,500 classic cars descending upon Zwartkops like a swarm of stylish locusts, ready to impress the automotive aficionados who will be munching on their snacks and observing the quirky parade.

But wait, there’s more! Over 120 clubs have booked their spots around the track for their members’ classic beauties. If you’re worried about showing up solo without a club membership, don’t be! Any genuine classic car built before 1997 can join the party for free, but bring some cash for your co-pilots because those passengers will have to pay their way in.

What’s an automotive carnival without the commercial side? Over 150 stalls will be serving up car-related trinkets, clothing, and enough food and drinks to fuel an army of gearheads. Live music will fill the air, and there will be plenty of activities to entertain the young ones. It’s a family day out, where the smell of gasoline mixes harmoniously with cotton candy and popcorn.

Now, let’s talk about the real stars of the show – the cars! If you’re into nostalgia, feast your eyes on the earliest vintage models, reminiscent of a time when people wore spats and top hats just to pick up groceries. But that’s not all! American classics will be strutting their stuff too, like beauty pageant contestants flashing their shiny chrome smiles. Pierre Diederichs, the POMC stalwart, will be showing off his impressive collection, including a rare 1949 Buick Dynaflow. Think of it as automotive royalty attending the ball.

Let’s not forget the British sports car marques that have withstood the test of time – Triumph and MG, celebrating their 100-year jubilee. And guess what? Jaguar is bringing out the big guns – the C-Type Le Mans racer that once dominated the French 24-Hour race. Who needs a time machine when you have these classics to take you on a historical journey?

If you’re a Beetle maniac, fear not! The classic VW Beetles and Kombis will be out in full force, proving once again that their charm is timeless. But watch out for the Beetle-Porsche hybrid lurking among them. It’s like a chameleon car, masquerading as a Beetle, but secretly harboring the heart of a Porsche.

The Germans, never to be outdone, will proudly showcase their classics like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and BMW, but keep an eye out for the elusive Borgward and DKW models. They may be lesser-known, but they’ve got their own unique charm and a history as fascinating as the plot of a good spy movie.

Speaking of history, the show won’t be complete without the iconic Mini Coopers, weaving through the crowd like a pack of agile terriers. These little cars may be small, but their place in automotive folklore is colossal. And don’t miss the Ford fans representing everything from the classic Model T to the legendary Capri Perana V8. It’s like a time machine showcase, and you’ll be tempted to shout, “Beam me up, Henry!”

So there you have it, folks – a day filled with roaring engines, shiny classics, and car enthusiasts with more knowledge about vehicles than your local mechanic. Cars in the Park 2023 promises to be a dazzling display of automotive history, where the past meets the present in a harmonious symphony of horsepower and nostalgia.

Remember, if you’re planning to attend, get there early to secure the best view of this car parade. Classic car owners, start your engines and cruise into Zwartkops at 6 am, while spectators can join the fun from 8:30 am. And yes, you can bring the whole family because there will be plenty to keep everyone entertained.

So whether you’re a die-hard gearhead, a casual car lover, or just someone looking for an exciting day out, Cars in the Park 2023 is the place to be. Who knows, you might just find yourself falling in love with a charming 1960s Lotus Elan or chuckling at the adorable Isetta with a front entrance. It’s a car show like no other, where the only thing bigger than the exhaust pipes is the enthusiasm of the attendees.

Mark your calendars, tell your friends, and let the countdown begin – Cars in the Park 2023 is coming, and it’s going to be a classic to remember!

Owners of classics displaying their cars are advised to get there earlier with the gates for classics open from 6 am. Drivers of classic cars built before 1985 will be admitted free of charge. The show runs until 4 pm on Sunday, August 6.

Spectator entry fees are R130 per person (R110 if booked through iTicket). Children under 12 are admitted free. For more information, visit the Pretoria Old Motor Club’s website on http://www.pomccitp.co.za. Or visit the club’s Cars in the Park page on Facebook.”
