Toyota Hilux Raider 48V

Innovation Station: 48V Technology Remember that mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) that wowed the crowds at the World Rally Championship in Kenya last year? Fast forward 12 months, and that very tech is now exclusively available in select Hilux and Fortuner models. Talk about a glow-up!

Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to reducing carbon emissions involves offering a variety of eco-friendly powertrain options. We’re talking hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles (HICEV), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), and even good old internal combustion engines (ICE) powered by alternative fuels. The 48V tech is just the latest in this green line-up, steering Toyota towards carbon neutrality.

What’s the 48V Buzz About? This 48V technology is exclusive to select 4×2 and 4×4 double-cab Legend and Raider grades, as well as the Fortuner. It incorporates a motor generator, 48-volt battery, and DC/DC converter into the already reliable 2.8-litre GD-6 turbo-diesel four-cylinder powertrain with a six-speed automatic transmission. The result? Improved fuel economy, smoother powertrain operation, and enhanced off-road capabilities.

Imagine reducing your fuel consumption by about 10% compared to a regular 2.8-litre engine, all thanks to the stop-start system enabled by the 48V tech. Plus, the engine restarts so smoothly and quickly that you might even forget it’s a stop-start system. Engine idling speed drops from 720rpm to 600rpm, and when you’re stuck in traffic, the engine can switch off for longer periods, saving you even more fuel.

Decelerating? The motor generator recovers braking energy, adding a natural braking feel and making driving easier. Accelerating? It provides power assistance for smoother, more responsive acceleration. For those off-road warriors, the 48V-equipped Hilux and Fortuner variants also include Multi-Terrain Select to enhance traction on various surfaces.

Oh, and did we mention the motor generator unit is positioned high in the engine bay, preserving the Hilux’s legendary off-road prowess? This tech is priced competitively, adding just a small premium over non-electrified models—now that’s what we call value!

Striking New Looks All Raider grades now flaunt a fresh front-end design, complete with a redesigned bumper, honeycomb mesh grille, and newly styled fog lamp bezels. For the 2.8 models, you’ll also notice black side mirrors, door handles, rear bumper, and tailgate handle—bye-bye chrome, hello sleekness!

The 2.4 model gets retractable mirrors, while the 2.8 boasts leather seats and 8-way power seat adjustment on the driver’s side. The Raider 48V steps it up with jam protection, auto up/down windows on all windows, push start, smart entry, and Multi-Terrain Select.

Accessorize to Maximize The refreshed Raider isn’t just about looks and tech; it’s also about customization. Toyota-approved lifestyle accessories now include roof racks, cross bars, rooftop tents, roof boxes, bike carriers, fridges, recovery boards, and solar panels. Partnering with brands like Ironman 4×4, 4×4 Megaworld, Front Runner, IVXIVBUSHINDABA, and Thule, these accessories are available at your local Toyota dealer for a one-stop-shop experience.

Connected for the Future With the MyToyota profile, owners can access all vehicle-related information and services quickly and conveniently. Plus, all new Toyota vehicles now come with in-car WiFi capability (with a complimentary 25Gb), offering a host of Connect services.

In short, the enhanced Hilux Raider solidifies its position as South Africa’s ultimate bakkie, combining performance, style, and unmatched versatility. Whether you’re tackling commercial tasks or seeking adventure, the new Hilux is ready to roll. As Glenn Compton, VP of Marketing at TSAM, says, “The enhanced Hilux range brings welcome enhancements to the range, ensuring that SA’s favourite bakkie remains a popular choice for commercial and adventure-focused customers alike.”
